Whether you have $1 or $1,000,000 dollars on your Derby horse, whether standing in front of the finish line or the TV, it’s impossible to escape the excitement as they’re racing down the final stretch. There’s a beauty to seeing them run, to have hundreds of people cheering the ponies on; the thrill is contagious. Being a Kentuckian, it’s my favorite time of the year. The best way to watch the Derby isn’t always under the twin spires. The best way to see the most-watched two minutes in sports is a Derby party!
The Junior League of Charleston’s Night at the Races offers the best gala outside of Churchill Downs. As an official Bluegrass Ambassador, I can tell you how many horses will run in the 142nd Kentucky Derby (20), and how many roses are draped around the winner (400 sewn by hand), just like I can tell you that Night at the Races is hands down the best Derby gala in town. With Mint Juleps galore, food, music from All Purpose Remedy, and live & silent auctions, you cannot go wrong. Can’t stand the anticipation of bidding on a trip to Napa Valley? An autographed Clemson football by Coach Dabo? Go online or text from your phone to bid, or use our new “Buy It Now” option.
No matter which horse crosses that finish line first, the true winner is the community. The rush you experience as the ponies round the final bend continues long after the finish line. Proceeds from Night at the Races go to our Community Partners to aid our mission of fighting hunger and homelessness. Join us on May 7th at the Daniel Island Country Club for Night at the Races or text to donate. Event details, tickets, auction items, and donation information can be found here.
