Lamb: The Gospel According to Biff, Christ's Childhood Pal

Christopher Moore

While some might find it irreverent or even blasphemous, this book made me laugh and reminded me what I love about my religion. I couldn’t put it down. If you can take a tongue and cheek, yet still critical, view of the origins of Christianity, please pick this one up.

Shopgirl

Steve Martin

Reading it 2 times, I hung on for the last word each time... Steve Martin has accomplished a beautiful piece of work in only 130 pages. The book is intelligent, enlightening and addicting. The movie that was based off the book was good, but honestly didn’t touch how charming the shy character truly is.

Dreamers of the Day

Mary Doria Russell

It is rare to get a glimpse into the past, and see just how much it effects our world today.  This book allows for such a glimpse.  It is crazy how much goes on and we are none the wiser.  Big decisions, impacting every one on the globe.  Scary.  Our past leads us to the future.  What we allow the decision makers to do  today, will impact tommorrow.  Dreamers of the Day, unravels yesterday’s problems and weaves them back into today’s.  Her work is thought provoking.  Full of the age old battle,  good vs.

Aphrodite's Daughters : Women's Sexual Stories and the Journey of the Soul

Jalaja Bonheim

In the early 1980s, Bonheim traveled to India to study classical dance and, as it happened, to be introduced to an aging devidasa, a woman who had served as a sexual priestess in the Hindu tradition of Tantra. That meeting sparked in Bonheim a previously unacknowledged interest in discovering the role of sexuality in women's spiritual lives. Now a therapist, Bonheim has interviewed dozens of women for this profound and moving exploration of how body touches soul. Here is a nun who found love with another woman and, eventually, turned back to

The Red Tent

Anita Diamant

THE RED TENT tells the little-known Biblical story of Dinah, daughter of the patriarch Jacob and his wife, Leah. In Chapter 34 of the Book of Genesis, Dinah’s tale is a short, horrific detour in the familiar narrative of Jacob and Joseph. Anita Diamant imaginatively tells the story from the fresh perspective of its women. In the Biblical tale Dinah is given no voice; she is the narrator of THE RED TENT, which reveals the life of ancient womanhood -- the world of the red tent.

Plain Truth

Jodi Picoult

I’ve recently started reading anything and everything Jodi Picoult has written. Thankfully, there’s quite a selection to choose from. My favorite so far has been her novel, Plain Truth. She has a great way of combining psychological drama and courtroom suspense with insights into complex human relationships. One her books is about to be released as a movie, My Sister’s Keeper, supposedly starring Cameron Diaz. One of many to come, I’m sure.

The Awakening

Kate Chopin

An excellent take on the human condition, an overbearing society and a the extreme, sad liberation of woman.
