Sarah Palin Makes History as the First Female Vice Presidential Nominee of the Republican Party
If you missed Governer Palin's acceptance speech at the Republican National Convention last night you can read it here or watch it below. Weigh in with your thoughts below!
I think she performed fine, but I really don't agree with the meat of what she said. Her politics are so far from mine, I wouldn't be able to vote for her. She's no Hillary.
I know political conventions are all about bashing the opponent, but I felt she was disrespectful not just of the Obama/Biden team and of those who support them.Palin's assumption that she could possibly represent all Americans is naive and arrogant and frankly, I find her politics bone-chillingly patriarchal. ~Jessica Leigh
We used to try and elect "the best and the brightest" among us. Now a big chunk of American voters are not only willing, but eager, to settle for mediocrity. Palin is not someone I would hold up as a role model for my daughter, especially after her vicious speech last night. my biggest disappointment is with McCain, who seems to think there is no difference between Hillary and Palin. I'll keep my Hillary sticker on my car, but I'm adding a "Women for Obama" one right next to it.

I used to listen to Rage Against the Machine to fire myself up before a big football (s#%cer) match, from now on I'll just listen to this speech and watch the reactions of the adoring crowd. I found myself literally screaming at the screen as I watched this smug, bitter, divisive, uninformed woman spout childish rhetoric designed purely to make the even more smug and uninformed crowd jump up and down and wave their cowboy hats in the air. I don't know about you, but I expect the leaders of my country to have opinions on issues other than abortion and polar bears. I cannot wait for her to attempt to argue with Joe Biden about America's role in the world, (she, "hasn't really paid much attention to Iraq") the future of our planet (she still doesn't think that global warming is man made) or how she would fix healthcare (she doesn't think it needs fixing). This is a woman who once tried to fire a librarian for not censoring books, wants to teach intelligent design in public schools and under the entry for 'Foreign Policy' on ontheissues.org it simply says 'No issue stance yet recorded by OnTheIssues.org.'
I'm off to play football.
Here is a true American Woman! She is exactly what we need in Washington. Truth hurts sometimes and that is why so many Democrats are acting out against her and saying negative things about her. She tells it like it really is and it's great to see how she has energized so many it was reported today on FOX NEWS that 37.2 million watched and listened to her last night about the same as Obama (37.3). So there is a huge chunk of people out there who believe in her message!
"The truth hurts"... what makes you think the Republicans have a lock on the truth? Oh wait, I forgot, God told them so. Here's the truth--Palin represents nothing that skirt! stands for. In case anyone is not paying attention, skirt! is liberal, prochoice, progressive. We believe the right to choose should be an individual's--not left up to preachers or politicians. We believe there is such a thing as global warming and it's up to us to do something about it or see our kids living in a desecrated natural world. We don't believe in banning books and we believe in evolution. Sorry, but there's probably a monkey in our collective past. And we ban gun ads from our magazines because we would like for our kids to be able to go to school without the fear of being killed in a classroom, so seeing the possible future VP showing off her gun skills doesn't make me feel warm and fuzzy. ~nikki, skirt! publisher
Too bad skirt doesn't stand for much besides a magazine full of ads with subpar articles that push pro-choice or HPV shots on young girls. Please, do everyone a favor and leave that to their parents.
I am glad that Palin represents a hard working mother who wants to make a positive difference in her country. I don't see you making one.
I now know what the definition of "blind faith" is. The woman plugged McCain so much that I almost threw up. I guess if a hockey MILF was strokin' my 72 year old, uh, ego, I'd be lettin' her play at my White House too!
Nikki, we have to play nice. If we are going to allow all books, then we have to allow comments by our unevolved skirts! who breathe the stale air because they've been told it's fresh. If we don't do things like watch our opposition on TV as they spout evolved factoids or listen to the thoughts of those who believe them, then we are blind sided by the ignorance that people still continue to carry around, handed down from generations of those who believe on the basis of "I said so".
I always love when people say the media is liberal. Did anyone consider that the media is abreast of ALL the facts and have made their choices accordingly?
that's how the Democrats always snatch defeat from the jaws of victory--by playing nice. Remember Kerry and Dukakis? That's why I loved Hillary--because she stood up for for her beliefs, as we all should, as the woman I responded to did. Hillary fought back even though people like my brother said, "She's like a man she's so aggressive." Well, yay for her! I"m simply stating what skirt stands for and has for 14 years and what I hope it will continue to stand for as long as I"m a part of it. Sometimes you have to play to win. That's why I've donated money and will sign up to volunteer for Obama tomorrow. You don't have to play dirty to be a formidable, vocal, kickass proponent for change...but you don't have to be a nice girl either. I challenge anyone out there who is worried about their planet, their country, their neighborhood, their family to take one small step to change the world. And while you're at it, read The Handmaid's Tale by Margaret Atwood. That's what being nice might get us. In the coming months, we'll be looking at women's issues around the globe--after all, sisters, we're in this together. I would love to hear your thoughts, your practical suggestions and experiences on how we can get women to mobilize and organize for change. Too often, we say we're just too busy with homework, housework, office work to work for a candidate. I'm guilty of it, too, but we can't let George do it or McCain do it or Obama do it--we have to do it. And if we don't, we have only ourselves to blame. Pregnant women can't eat tuna because of the mercury levels? Let's get mad! Our schools have to install metal detectors for guns? Let's get mad! Somebody wants to make it hard to get your birth control pills filled? Let's get mad! Let's get moving!
I hate that sarcasm doesn't come across in written medium.
I was literally in tears thinking how different today could be if Al Gore had continued his fight and proven himself the rightful winner. And I told myself that I didn't do enough to ensure that I did everything I could to get him elected. (or, subsequently Kerry) And so this time I've signed up with the local Obama office and with moveon.org to speak to more people. I am researching facts (like McCain missed 63.8% of Congressional votes vs. Obama who missed 45.5%) so I can spout them back to the misinformed who choose to believe what they choose to believe. "When they own the information, they can bend it all they want." Thanks John Mayer!
I wish I could continue but I've spent the last 45 minutes discerning fact from fiction in the McCain speech.
That's okay, I'll blog it all out in the morning, put on my pin, and in any other way I can do everything in my power to spread a whole lotta information in my very red part of the country. This time I'm not holding back.
Well regardless of political party and views, I think we all have to agree that this election cycle is ground breaking. No longer will it be white men running DC. Even though I am not an Obama supporter, I am happy that my country has finally put aside race and has decided to give something new a chance. Same for Palin, a woman in the White House, regardless of party, is a great step in the right direction, and its about time!! As for Palin, I think McCain made a smart choice, considering she has experience running a state, unlike McCain, Obama, and Biden.
So you may not agree with her party or her views, but be happy that politics in DC is changing and is becoming more open minded like the rest of the world.
For me, it's all about the politics. That's what politics is about -- the issues. Sure, I would be thrilled if there was still a female politician running for president whose platform I believed in (which is why I was such a proud Hillary supporter), but I refuse to be "happy" that there will possibly be a woman second in line to the White House who would work to destroy all of the women's rights we've worked so hard to earn over the past hundred or so years. I don't think this is an example of politics in DC changing or becoming more open-minded. It's more of the same -- just wrapped in a different-looking package.
And exactly why would she "destroy all of the women's rights we've worked so hard to earn over the past hundred or so years"? What is she doing to do, take away our right to vote, not let us be in the army? Come on, you are being a little dramatic.
