Smarty...pig?

I’m always looking for better ways to save money...particularly since I have been diligently attempting to pay off the credit card debt I accrued during my college study abroad program in Italy years ago (no summer job + two months abroad = overspending), and finding the process frustrating.

Credit card companies are the devil.

Anyway, today I stumbled upon this web site: SmartyPig. It’s a free online savings program that lets you deposit cash towards a savings goal you set for yourself (pay off credit card debt, save up for a kitchen remodel, work towards an awesome vacation)--and you have the option of making your savings goals and totals public, so your friends and family can donate to your fund, too.

Plus, it’s insured, and has a variable interest rate of 3.9%, which is pretty great.

I get paid on Friday...who knows? I might just have to test this thing out myself.

Thanks for sharing the site. You certainly aren't alone in the credit card debt! Now is the time to do something about it, right?
Stylishly yours,

I am *so* bad at saving. I think that if I used Smarty Pig - or anything other than my regular bank, the money would be safer. . .almost "forgotten." Yeah. . .

my debt from my studies abroad still haunts me as well. thankfully, my husband is MUCH more vigilant about these things, and makes sure we're paying off big chunks every month. it means pimento cheese sandwiches, but it also means that eventually i can buy that camera i've been eye-ing and go on the vacation i've been dreaming about! i was doing REALLY well with my ING savings account (4.9%!), until the timing belt broke on my car. Sad.

I'm glad to know I'm not the only one haunted by study abroad debt, and also that I'm not the only one who has a hard time saving. I think it's really important, especially in this economy...
