Making a Statement

Saturday, June, 28, 2008

My “other” son, the middle child of my bff, was over excited to see the new Disney/Pixar movie WALL-E.  Personally I couldn’t really figure out what the movie was about but it was something to do with my kids and since I didn’t know, it was bound to surprise and amaze me, right?

AMC theaters has a lovely offering on the weekends called A.M. Cinema.  Movies before noon are shown at a reduced rate. It works wonderfully for me when school’s in because I can get a movie in without the kids and before carpool.  It works out well when school’s out as well because we don’t spend the morning getting ready for a movie we can’t leave for until 12:20.  (And once we’ve found other activities, usually we’re committed to them and don’t want to leave.)  So we packed the kids in and went at 10:45 to see the new movie.

When we got there, I noticed a poster that let us know that for being the wonderful people to help push the movie’s opening weekend gross ticket sales, we would be given a free, limited edition WALL-E watch.  (Say it with me- “Oooooh. Ahhhhh!”)  DSCF1639.JPG

Yes, so now you see the exclusive, run to your nearest theater and buy your ticket to get this limited edition watch, um, watch.  (Modeled by my 5 1/2 year old Princess Attitude.)  Seriously it is one of the rubber “cause” braceletes with a half a penny PITA digital watch inside it. I spent longer trying to set one of them than I did standing in line for tickets and a water. (Another benefit of AM Cinema...you’ve just had breakfast so you don’t have to have the popcorn- or at least that’s what I told the kids. When I go for myself, I have the popcorn for breakfast!)  And, in case you aren’t looking for something with the star himself, then you can flip to the other side for EVE, seen here...DSCF1638.JPG

The moment we’ve all been waiting for comes, the 25 minutes of previews are over, the lights go all the way down, and I start to understand what the movie is about.  I won’t ruin the ending for anyone but just in case you wanna be more in the know than I was, read up. (And read the irony.)  WALL-E was left behind as a cure to the gargbe overcrowding problem on Earth.  He is basically a mobile trash compactor who gathers trash, condenses it into nice little cubes, and stacks them into very high piles.

Take it all in.  The watch, WALL-E’s purpose...(this moment sponsored by Jason Mraz’ Remedy a FAB song I’m in LOVE with- visit the site for a laugh and some fun eye candy if nothing else.)

Welcome back newly converted Jason fans!  I hope you’ve connected the dots.  If not, here’s the cliff note, dots-connected version.  Here we are watching a movie about the effects of pollution and excessive consumerism and yet we’re rewarding the consumers to this movie with a piece of crap watch that will, undoubtedly, be tossed within a month.  (I wonder how many were left behind, either by accident or on purpose by our movie viewing cohorts.)

The movie itself was great with a few strong messages (not just pollution and consumerism) and I’d give it 3 1/2 stars, but maybe the guys at Pixar Marketing should have thought as much about a cohesive message as the animaters did in creating fire scenes and such.

Enjoy! (your weekend!)

I still want to see the movie even though they're giving out landfill fodder. http://cribnotes.pnn.com http://www.radioalice.com/
