It's Over

Tuesday, May, 27, 2008

I’m sad. I just finished reading Truth and Beauty last night (at midnight) by Ann Patchett. Thank you Heather, it was beautiful. Based on the true story of the poet Lucy Grealy, and her friendship with the author, this book took me back to a time of  happily reading forever, which is not always easy for a high school English teacher. I never wanted to put it down, but almost cried when I finished. Okay, I DID cry, but it was because of the content, and it started LONG before the end of the novel. My problem with a great book (if you can call it a problem) is that I get into it. REALLY into it. In college I was known to walk around with a book hanging from my nose, mute even to  friends until I reached the inevitable and unfortunate end. Pat Conroy kept me quite busy.....Prince of Tides, anyone?

The question now? WHAT DO I READ NEXT?!!? It has to be good. No, it has to be great. I will probably follow it up with another by the same author, (Bel Canto) OR read Grealy’s Autobiography of a Face, which chronicles her struggles with a childhood diagnosis, and lifelong battle with cancer of the jaw. So I’m thinking here, is anybody up for a book? Let’s have like a little Skirt book club!  AND, maybe even higher on the important to me scale right now, what should I read next!?

I love the idea for a skirt! book club. I have one with my friends, but once a month just isn't enough fix for me. I read the book right away, but then read 5 or 6 more after that.
As for what to read next, I wish I had a great recommendation, a la Pat Conroy style. But after the Memory Keeper's Daughter, Running with Scissors and Then We Came to the End all in a row, I switched to a little refreshing chick lit to keep from being too depressed. If you come up with anything let me know.
Stylishly yours,

LOVE that you said "a la!" I'll let you know when I've picked a new tome, and maybe you'll join me!

I know how you feel. I always have to have a book waiting in the wings or I get very upset. I rush to finish books (also have devoured books for years) and then when I'm done I think, "shit.. i have nothing to read." Right now I'm reading (and I use that loosely because my reading time is the few minutes that I'm waiting for one of my kids at school pick up, or for a delayed doctor, or whatever. My book is ALWAYS in my bag for just such an occasion). "Life After Death" by Carol Muske Dukes. I met her and she's fascinating. The book isnt about cherubs and trumpets with clouds, it's about what happens to the living after someone dies. Sad, but interesting. A great book is "Motherless Brooklyn" by Jonathon Letham. (I'm from NY, so it was nice for me..but, I don't think you need to be a new yawka to appreciate.). Let's do the book club thing... or try...

You don't really have a choice in this book club thing. I will force you if need be. :) Go get your book. NOW! Was that forceful enough?

Autobiography of a Face by Lucy Grealy. By the way, I need your brain to help me come up with a name for this book club.

Ok, I just reserved the book at my library.. now i have to actually get over there to pick it up. I read the excerpt though and I was wondering if you could pick an even BIGGER DOWNER!! Holy crap... I'm going to have to keep cosmos in a pitcher in the fridge for this one.
As for a book club name... I have to think about this one--I do like dog eared but maybe that's too on the nose. Let me think on this one. By the way, go to my personal blog and email me directly.... http://www.blogger.com/profile/06588087853076408522

I love the idea of a book club. I'm always out of books to read. I just ordered Truth and Beauty. I'm ready for something a little more serious since I've just plowed through a couple of Christopher Moore books my sister-in-law gave me. Lamb and Practical Demon Keeping. Very funny, easy reads. If there's anything we (skirt.com) can do to help get it going, please let us know. I know Angelia's wheels are already turning on how to help make this happen!

I spoke with Angelia and am in the process of coming up with her secret government name. I just received Autobiography of a Face, and am mad excited! I told her that I would love to participate in whatever you would allow me to put my hands in! Let me know when you finish Truth and Beauty. I'd love to hear what you thought of it. ~Pamela
