Daddy's Stories

Wednesday, May, 14, 2008

My dad is the best story teller in the world. My cousin and author, Oscar Casares, has often said that he believes his story telling talent was influenced by my dad.Oral story telling runs in my family.

When I was a very little girl he used to be a barber and the barber shop was right next door to our house.Sometimes when my mom had to run errands she would leave me with my dad.

He would tell me stories and sometimes he would draw pictures to go along with the story he was telling. He loved to tell me stories from the bible and he would make all the voices and the faces to act out the characters. He was very animated and he would get me all wrapped up in the story.I was anxious to hear what would happen next.I especially loved to hear the stories about when he was a little boy in the Texas Rio Grande Valley during the Great Depression.

I’ve written a couple of short stories based on stories that my father told me when I was growing up. I have an idea for a book that I would love to pitch to a book publisher. My idea is a collection of short stories written by my father, in his words, followed by short stories that I wrote based on some of these stories.Kind of like the Natalie Cole/Nat King Cole or the Lisa Marie Presley/Elvis Presley duets.I would love to do this.My dad has already written down most of these stories for me. I think that will be my next writing project. I want to call it Daddy’s Stories.
