High Noon in the Breakroom

Wednesday, April, 16, 2008

I’ve never shot a gun before. Not even for paintball. (Do you even use a gun for that?)

I’m not a big fan of guns. Yeah, I know... right to bear arms, yadda yadda. And I’m even a card-carrying ACLU member, and among the causes near and dear to me, the organization also defends extremists like the NRA. But this latest guns in the workplace bill passed in Florida and just signed by Governor Crist... this I do not get... AT ALL.

I’m sorry. Is there a revolution taking control of the country currently? I realize that the right to bear arms is to allow citizens to protect themselves from their own country, but is it really necessary to pack a loaded gun in your car sitting next to mine in the office parking lot? If someone goes crazy at work, is your intent to allow licensed and registered gun users the opportunity to dash out to their car and take the law into their own hands?

How about this scenario, which is more likely:

Someone breaks into your car parked next to mine to steal the shiny new Wii console you just purchased and maybe steal the whole car altogether. I come upon my car after a late night in the office and see the culprit, and now, you’ve provided your thief a wonderful aid– a loaded weapon to use on anyone that comes across his path while caught in the act.

Gee, thanks for that.

Here’s another lovely scenario:

Remember those crazy road rage gun spats on the LA highways about a decade or two ago? Hmmm... what better way to take care of a traffic problem than to equip a nutjob with a firearm? And you thought bumping the car in front of you or running someone off the road was truly original. Wait until these goons pass you with a pistol hanging out their window...

Yeah. I really love this bill, Charlie. Thanks so much.

So, am I the only one terrified of the latest example of Florida legislation lunacy?
