What a week it’s been! It is so late and I am EXHAUSTED. When I prepared to leave for this trip, I thought of it as a working vacation. Now I know better--whew--business trips are hard work!
Today we started Superlove Day 2 at 8:30am with a parade from Congo Square in Armstrong Park to the Superdome. The parade was led by Dr. Denis Mukwege of the Democratic Republic of the Congo--an incredible doctor who works to end abuses on women and children in his country, and works to help heal those who have already been injured. Eve Ensler was right at the front with him.
Code Pink, The Pussyfooters, drum lines, second line bands, and many, many free spirits came out to celebrate and it was INCREDIBLE. I keep using the same words because my brain has been overstimulated from all of the incredible conversations I’ve had, people I’ve met, and knowledge I’ve taken in, so pardon my lack of linguistic creativity.
At the Superdome, we managed to snag Amber Tamblyn, Rosario Dawson, and Kerry washington after their panel. Ali Larter was busy signing autographs. They were very kind to share with us what feminism means to them. Rock on, celebs. Rock on. Margaret got to speak with Suze Orman about feminism while I was engrossed with a talk from Sara Blakely, the founder of Spanx. She is funny and gorgeous. She is also thin--do you think she wears her own product? I hope so. Otherwise, it’s just not fair. She looks like a model.
We did yoga and interviewed other Superlove attendees. We felt mentally and socially balanced. It was a great lead-in to The Vagina Monologues! Those women were some powerful performers! I experienced chills, tears, and belly-laughs, all in one night.
Thank you, Eve Ensler, for being an inspiration to women everywhere, and being part of an organization that literally blows my mind and makes me want to be a better person.
