I loved the 1982 film, “The Year of Living Dangerously.” Mel and Sigourney getting all hot and bothered in steamy, turbulent Indonesia. While specific scenes have gotten a bit fuzzy since I last rented it, the movie’s title has only become more clear, compelling and urgent.
Live dangerously Giulietta.
Every year.
Get out of that boring safety zone and into the heart-thumping action of life. Basically, the kind of stuff that would be on your resume if a prospective employer really wanted to know what you could do for them, instead of those soul-numbing “action” phrases job hunting books advise you to slap on.
Implemented. Developed. Saved. Generated. (Snore …)
(Wo) Man, how did so many of our lives become dictated by a piece of paper? Shouldn’t it be the other way around? Shouldn’t we fit “resumes” into our living?
A while back, I ripped up my traditional resume in order to “re-zoom” my life. And you know what? “I feel better now. I feel better than James Brown …” thx Was (Not Was)! I now move to my own beat, looking for all the juicy adventures life has to offer. Some are in my own backyard; others I seek farther from home. They might feel physically dangerous like hot air ballooning, or emotionally dangerous like speaking my truth. If I feel myself getting uncomfortable, I know there is something or someone I have to turn around and face.
How about you? Anything you need to face?
Need to sign off for today. Just wanted to leave you with this first muse-merizing taste of “The Month of Blogging Dangerously.” I invite you to join me on this e-muse adventure, to let the rest of us know if and how you’d like to live more dangerously—be it emotionally, spiritually, physically, financially, creatively or some other “ly.”
Remember, when you check into the nursing home it will be one someday too many to “re-zoom” your life!
Over and under and around and between and …
Muse Thanks!
Giulietta N.
p.s. my “real” name is Julianne, usually shortened to Julie, but that log-in was taken. My Italian grandmother, Giulietta, must have been channeling through me because I automatically typed in Giulietta as a second choice. I had been thinking of changing the spelling of Julie to Giuli, so here’s my chance ... Future musings will have more to say about my grandmother and how I discovered her real name wasn’t Julia as I’d been told; it was Giulietta.
Was (Not Was).

Giulieta:
I also loved "The Year of Living Dangerously." Saw it a couple of times. About time I see it again.
You are absolutely right. Don't be afraid of living dangerously - maybe not in the same sense as in the movie - but be more willing to take some risks, chance a few opportunities, and give that stale old resume a twist. Unless you want to be mired down in "Implementing, developing, saving, and generating" for the benefit of others, you have to take chances when you get them. Give your life a whirl. Follow your instincts rather than a life ruled by rules, enclosed by barriers, and hedged in by concerns. When it comes to the end, I, for one, want to go out saying, "What a great adventure life was," and not, "Thank God it's over" or "I'm too tired to go on." Maybe it's lousy advice, but living dangerously or on the edge can be so very rewarding.

Pennie,
So glad you stopped by. "Follow your instincts rather than a life ruled by rules ..." Words from a wise woman for sure. Look forward to more of your thoughtful comments!

Hey Ms G:
Some days I wake up fearless, and those are always my good days. I even appreciate having a good fearless few minutes to do whatever scary thing I have to do that day. Don't you find there is always one thing you have to do that you've been putting off and it just gets bigger and hairier and its teeth grow longer and pointier the more you put it off? I hate that.
Then I finally freakin do it, and I feel all freed up, and the rest of the day is a breeze. I recommend it:)

Hey Erica,
I love how you describe those things we put off. It's true they only get bigger and uglier by the minute. Much less stressful to face it now. thx!

Hey, one of the things on my to do list for this week is to try to fit myself into that piece of paper called a resume. I kind of like the idea of ripping it up instead.
Right now my experience fits neatly into the resume, and not only that, I've relied heavily on other pieces of paper (transcripts, license, reference letters) to help me reach a certain destiny. However, that has not been a decent way to live creatively. That would involve other talents and instincts, in addition to knowing where the opportunities are. And we all know that living dangerously financially is likely to be involved.
So, tell us about what happened after you ripped up that piece of paper? Did you already have some ideas and contacts in your back pocket? What did you do next?
Looking forward to reading more.

Thanks for commenting Sally. I will devote more blog entries to this topic. There are some good "find your work dream" gurus on the Internet that opened my eyes to new ways of working. I will post their sites in that entry. I feel, though, that the best place to start is to find your unique genius and build your life outward around that. This, we are not taught to do in school.
