Awards season: The conclusion

Tuesday, February, 26, 2008

With the writer’s strike, it’s been a pretty skimpy awards season this year. That doesn’t mean I can’t enjoy the Oscars (the dresses! the speeches! the clips!), but I realized mid-way into the show that this is probably the first year that I haven’t seen most (if not all) of the movies. Then I realized I probably only went to the movie theater once in all of 2007.

Reason? Netflix. I prefer watching movies in the comfort of my own home on my own big TV. Is there Dolby surround sound? No, but there are also no sticky floors, chatty people, or sitting next to strangers in the dark. I used to go to the theater at least once a week, now I’m down to once a year. And waiting for new releases to move up my Netflix queue.

I did make it just in time to see The Diving Bell and the Butterfly (four noms, no wins) with my friend Leigh on Saturday. Julian Schnabel directed (he also directed one of my all-time top 25 favorite movies, Basquiat). It was lovely, stunning, and claustrophobic all at the same time.

The only other Oscar nominated films I’ve seen this year: Away From Her (amazing!) and La Vie en Rose. I think Julie Christie should have gotten best actress, frankly, but then again I fell asleep halfway through La Vie en Rose.

So yes, I’ve missed all the great ones, but they’re all in my queue. I’ll try to do better next year with the watching of the movies at the theater before award season (barring another strike!).

for some reason i love going to movies now. even if i go by myself, i love to sit in the quiet and not be forced to talk to anyone. or if i go with other people, i always make them share a popcorn with me, but then i dump all that fake flavor salt on it and shake it around through the previews so it gets flavor-y all over. yeah, i am that jerk shaking her popcorn. sorry.

I'm totally with you...once my husband and I discovered Netflix, we rarely find a reason to see a movie in the theatres. It is annoying when you pay $9 to sit next to someone who can't stop talking and add to that $10/hr we pay for a sitter, it ends up being a lot of money for something you do in the comfort of your own home for a lot less in just a few months. One recommendation...Juno...we did see that in the theatre recently (I couldn't wait for the DVD) and loved it. The soundtrack is perfect background music at dinnertime!

Great blog, Kelly. I'm an OnDemand fan for the same reason...going to a movie theater and having to deal with the rude crowds is a thing of the past with me. In fact, the last movie I saw in a theater, I witnessed a woman punch out another woman because she had the audacity to tell her kids to sit down and be quiet.

It's nice to know that I'm not the only one who has replaced my movie-going with Netflix! I thought it was because I haven't been dating or socializing...
