Clean Girl

Monday, November, 12, 2007
My daughter who is almost eight is definitely growing up.  How do I know?  She asked to take a shower this morning.  For some reason this simple action is a defining fork in the road, her transition from the little girl who must be prompted by her mother to get clean, to the big girl who takes responsibility for her hygiene.  My only contribution is checking the temperature of the water to make sure it is not too hot..

She made a clean break from baths to showers about a year ago.  But even then I had to bribe, cajole and often force her to get in the shower and get clean.  Always this occurred at night, usually every other day, but sometimes three or more days passed in between bathing.

Some thing has changed.  I don't know if she saw me showering in the morning and decided its what she wanted to do too, or if it just feels good to be clean.
All I know intuitively is that it means my little girl is growing up.  I know it is just one of many milestones to come.  I only hope she needs me to keep checking the water temperature for a very long time.  It’s the least I can do.
