It always amazes me how much organising mothers do that they never get credit for. I have friends who stayed home with their kids and when they try to get back in the workforce the first question they are always asked is: "What skills do you have managing people or running an office?"
Let's face it mothers have incredible organisational skills. They run their homes and their families' lives and often get little credit for doing it so.
I was off from work today, but in many ways I worked harder at home than I do at the office. There was a doctor's appointment, Christmas shopping with my four-year-old in tow (which I don't recommend unless you want to spend a lot of time searching for her behind racks of clothes), the tailor, the grocery store, the drug store, carpool and an afternoon play date at my house with five children.
But here’s where it gets really complicated-my daughters have acting and ballet the next day and my husband is taking them because I have to work. This is something he has never done. So I had to lay out everything for the day and write explicit notes and directions for my husband. In the late afternoon my husband and older daughter are going camping with the Y-Princesses. Yes, I had to dig out the camping gear, sleeping bags, flashlights, you name it, not to mention packing warm clothes and food.
When its all said and done everything will go smoothly-it always does because I was prepared. But to my family it will look like these things just magically happen.
So ladies the next time you go to a job interview and someone asks you what you can do, tell it like it is, say: "Everything."

This is exactly what I needed to read this morning. After 6 years at home with my boys, I'm looking for a "real job" again and am humbled by how hard it is! Filling out applications and entering my work experience from oh so long ago feels silly....I know I'm qualified but it looks like I'll have to convince everyone else that I haven't been at home watching Oprah all this time!
