One of the hardest things about being a working mother is the morning rush. One of the hardest things about being the children of a working mother is the morning rush.
My husband goes to work before the kids get up, so it’s up to me to keep everything rolling. I try to get up early, exercise, take a shower, and make their breakfast before waking them at 7:00. But no matter what time I get started, we always seem to be rushing out the door with things left undone. Someone forgot to brush her teeth or grab her lunch box. We need something special for a school project that we can’t find. I forget to grab my cell phone or my suit jacket. Someone needs a shoe tied or a belt buckled. Sometimes there are tears- from them and from me.
I struggle between giving my girls maximum sleep time, and giving them ample getting ready time. Clearly, the rush starts the day off on a stressful note which only adds to our already stressful lives. No one needs more stress.
On the odd weekdays when I don’t work and can simply jump into the car in my sweat pants and a t-shirt (usually what I wore to bed) with no makeup on and my hair in a ponytail, the morning is much smoother. On those days I don’t have to worry about me, only them. This makes all the difference.
I know thousands of women every day experience these same mornings. I don’t have the answer to the morning madness, believe me I don’t. But I’m searching for one. I’ll let you know if I come up with anything.

Don't I know this scenario! My husband has early morning clients, but on the rare mornings he's home it actually seems even more chaotic. To add to the nonsense, we just got a dog that needs to be walked and fed before we leave or she'll do unspeakable things on the floor and to the furniture.
Why does it seem like we do more than the generation before? I seem to remember as a second-grader getting myself up, pouring a bowl of cereal, tiptoeing out the door so I wouldn't wake my mother and walking to school. No answers from this crazy busy mama, just the reminder that some day in the not-too-distant future they'll be able to drive themselves while we sleep in...
